About Jargon Wall

In August 2013, I wrote an article for the Nature Soapbox Science blog. In that article, I coined the term “jargon wall”. I used it as follows:

Two things stand in the way of public access to science. The first is obviously the paywall; the second is something that I describe as the ‘jargon-wall’.

Science thrives on precision.  But the specialized language of science – its jargon – creates a barrier to understanding it. Science is delightful discovery, a steely logic of wonder, the magic of reality; yet for too many it is inaccessible, hidden behind a jargon wall. This website is my contribution towards tearing down that wall.
